The Partnership for skills in Applied Sciences, Engineering and Technology (PASET) was launched in 2013 by the Governments of Senegal, Ethiopia, and Rwanda with facilitation by the World Bank. It aims to address systemic gaps in skills and knowledge in Sub-Saharan Africa’s priority ASET fields and to build the capacity of African education and training institutions to train high-quality technicians, engineers, and scientists to meet the demands of the economy.
Applications are invited for PASET Regional Scholarships and Innovation Fund for PhD Scholars in three eligible thematic areas are Information Communications Technology (ICT), Food security and Mining, materials and minerals engineering. Applicants from Sub-Saharan Africa are eligible to apply for this scholarship.
RSIF aims to provide the ecosystem necessary to nurture its scholars during their Ph.D. program and continue to create the support system for them after graduation.
Course Level: Scholarships are available to pursue Ph.D. programme.
Study Subject: Applicants must have applied to at least one of RSIF’s African Host Universities in at least one of the thematic areas. For the 2017/2018 cohort, the 3 eligible thematic areas are:
* Information Communications Technology (ICT)
* Food security
* Mining, materials and minerals engineering.
Scholarship Award: The program provides financial support for up to 4 years of the Ph.D. program with an annual support package of US$ 24,400. Students admitted to the program will receive a stipend of $14,400 per year to cover expenses such as travel to/from home country, health insurance, living expenses, etc. The balance amount of the scholarship package will go towards tuition, research funding for the Ph.D. supervisor and scholarship administration.
Number of Scholarships: Up to 50 scholarships will be awarded in the first round. There is a plan to increase the number of scholarship recipients in the future.
Scholarship can be taken in order to be eligible for the RSIF scholarship; applicants must apply to one of the four RSIF Host Universities:
- University of Felix Houphouet-Boigny, Cote d’Ivoire
- University of Gaston Berger, Senegal
- Sokoine University of Agriculture, Tanzania
- African University of Science and Technology, NigeriaÂÂ
Eligibility Criteria:
The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for these scholarships:
Students will be selected based on several criteria including ones set by the host institution and also by PASET. Below are the eligibility requirements for the current Call for Applications.
- Applicants must be citizens of a sub-Saharan African country.
- Applicants must have applied to at least one of RSIF’s African Host Universities in at least one of the thematic areas. For the 2017/2018 cohort, the 3 eligible thematic areas are:
* Information Communications Technology (ICT)
* Food security
* Mining, materials and minerals engineering.
- Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in a relevant field of study.
Applicants must be willing to enroll full-time in the Ph.D. program. Students may take on teaching/research assistantship related to their discipline of study on the campus where they are pursuing their Ph.D. program.
Priority Will Be Given To Applicants Who:
- Are junior African faculty/academic staff with 1-5 years of teaching/research experience but no PhD
- Have a compelling life history and academic trajectory
- Demonstrate a commitment to pursuing an academic career beyond the scholarship period
- Demonstrate leadership potential, such as community service in areas related to PASET RSIF fields of study
- Are women or ethnic minorities; have physical disabilities
Nationality:  Applicants from Sub-Saharan Africa (Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo (Brazzaville), Congo (Democratic Republic), Ivory Coast, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe) are eligible to apply for this scholarship.
College Admission Requirement
Entrance Requirements: There is no age restriction for applicants for the RSIF program. Any candidate with a relevant Master’s degree but no Ph.D. is eligible to apply. However, please check the individual requirements of the universities to which you are applying for their eligibility rules.
English Language Requirements: Proficiency in one of the languages i.e. French and English is mandatory. For this round, two of the universities selected are Francophone and the other two are Anglophone. Visit the websites below to assess the language requirements and support provided by Host Centers
