The Charles Huang Foundation donation provides a scholarship for scholars of exceptional merit undertaking the Strathclyde MBA or an MSc on a full-time study basis (one year) in Glasgow. The SYGL scholarship programme aims to develop global leaders in society and business. Successful candidates will receive a scholarship that includes the full Strathclyde MBA/MSc fees and a stipend to cover living costs for the academic year. Alongside your MBA/MSc studies, each scholar will receive additional mentorship support and the opportunity to apply for enhanced leadership development via the Stephen Young Institute of International Business (SYIIB). You will also become a part of the wider SYIIB Community.

The SYGL programme will develop the capabilities that leaders require in an increasingly competitive and rapidly changing, global environment. In addition to your MBA/MSc studies – and conditional on meeting your programme requirements and also conditional on availability of places – SYGL Scholars may apply for one of the following opportunities:

  • an international summer school placement (subject to availability) with another university such as a strategic university partner of Strathclyde, including flights and accommodation
  • taking part in a special research project outlined by the Stephen Young Institute for International Business
  • (MBA only) attending MBA elective classes at Strathclyde’s international MBA centres around the world (to include flights/accommodation) – Europe, Middle East and Far East

  • In addition, all SYGL scholars are offered coaching/mentoring support by at least one business leader, CEO or other senior executive of a large organisation within an industry relevant to the candidate’s industry background and future career aspirations.

Requirements

The Stephen Young Global Leaders scholarship programme is open to any outstanding candidate who believes that they meet our eligibility requirements and whose values and aspirations reflect those outlined in the scholarship’s criteria guidelines. We embrace diversity and strongly encourage applications from under-represented groups, particularly individuals from Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities, women, LGBT+, disabled candidates and candidates from lower socio-economic groups.

Irrespective of your background, all applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  1. You must meet the admissions criteria for your chosen Strathclyde full-time MBA/MSc programme. Applications to the programme should be made after you have successfully completed the selection process for the SYGL scholarship and hold a scholarship award.
  2. You must be able to demonstrate exceptional academic merit in your application for the Stephen Young Global Leaders scholarship programme. For example, a first -class undergraduate degree from a UK University, or equivalent academic qualification from a comparable non-UK institution.
  3. You must be a self-funded student who does not have access to other sources of funding such as corporate sponsorship or alternative scholarship funding.
  4. If you are shortlisted, you will be required to attend a formal interview (either in person or virtually). Attendance at interview is not a guarantee of a scholarship.

Selection Process

  • All applications are submitted online via a formal application form.
  • All applications are reviewed and then some are shortlisted by a Strathclyde Business School panel. Thereafter, a Selection Committee will be appointed to consider all shortlisted applications.
  • The Selection Committee will be chaired by the Executive Dean of SBS or his/her nominee and senior academic representatives.
  • Decisions of the Selection Committee shall be made by simple majority. If a decision cannot be reached, the Chair shall make the final decision.
  • Recommendations will be shared with the Charles Huang Foundation, and the University will make the final decision on selection.

Method of Application

To apply for the scholarship, you should complete the following steps:

*the MS form needs to be completed in one sitting. There is not an option to save the form and return to it.
