The United Nations Nippon Foundation Fellowship Programme is an initiative at renowned institutions, including a phase at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The 9-month fully funded fellowship programme includes a monthly stipend, book allowance, medical insurance, and round-trip economy class airfare.

The United Nations Nippon Foundation Fellowship 2026 is composed of two consecutive phases which provide Fellows with advanced and customized research and training opportunities in their chosen fields.

Requirements

To be considered for the Program, you must:

  • Hold at least a first-level university degree (bachelor’s or equivalent)
  • Be between the ages of 25 and 45 years.
  • Currently employed by a government, non-governmental organization, or academic institution.
  • Demonstrate the ability to undertake independent academic research.
  • Be committed to contributing to policy and governance in areas related to ocean affairs, sustainable development, or international law.
  • Candidates from developing countries are strongly encouraged to apply.

Benefits

General Stipends

Fellows will receive a monthly stipend during their Fellowship, both during their time in New York and, for the United Nations – Nippon Foundation Fellowship on Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (UNNF-OALOS) Fellows, participating in the 9-month programme, during their time at the second phase host institution. 

Travel

Fellows will be provided with a round-trip economy class airline ticket for travel between their home country and New York to undertake the Fellowship.

Accommodation/Housing

Fellows are responsible for securing their accommodations; in the case of the UNNF-OALOS Fellows completing the 9-month Fellowship, this is valid for both placement locations.
