As Teacher Training Students under the Japanese Government MEXT Scholarship Program, foreign students who study in higher education institutions receive full scholarships covering the costs of study, healthcare, travel, and living expenses, and are selected on the recommendation of Japanese Embassy/Consulate General, University, or Authority.

Requirements

To be considered for the Japanese Government MEXT Scholarship, you must:

  • Nationality Requirements: Applicants should be nationals of countries holding diplomatic ties with Japan. Dual nationals must renounce their Japanese citizenship by the time they arrive in Japan.
  • Age Limit: Candidates should be born on or after April 2, 1991.
  • Academic and Professional Background: Must be graduates of universities or teacher training colleges with a minimum five-year teaching experience as of April 1, 2026.
  • Japanese Language Proficiency: A strong willingness to learn Japanese is required.
  • Health Standards: Medical fitness, as confirmed by a certified health certificate, is mandatory.
  • Arrival in Japan: Arrival must align with the designated period, usually two weeks before the course starts.
  • Visa Requirements: Must obtain a “Student” visa prior to entering Japan and maintain this status.

Benefits

  • Allowance: After arrival in Japan, 143,000 yen per month will be paid.
  • A supplemental regional allowance of 2,000 or 3,000 yen per month will be added to the monthly scholarship amount 
  • Education Fees: Fees for the entrance examination, matriculation and tuition at universities will be paid by MEXT.

  • Certified grade transcript for each academic year from the last university/ teacher training school attended
  • The diploma from the last university/ teacher training school attended
  • Certificate of employment
  • Recommendation letter from the immediate supervisor at work
  • Medical certificate
