The Capacity Accelerator Network (CAN) initiative develops data science talent for climate and health impact across Africa. The CAN Fellowship provides emerging data science professionals with the skills needed to address challenges at the intersection of climate and health and make a positive impact on lives across the continent. 

During the program, participants collaborate with host institutions and mentors on projects to share their data skills, encourage innovative solutions, and build a network of data professionals committed to sustainable development. The fellowship includes practical project work, media training, and opportunities for fellows to present their work at local, regional, and international events.

Requirements

  • Applicants should have a completed first university degree, capacity for independent academic research and study, at least three years of working experience in data management, analysis, and visualization, good communication skills, strong expertise in technology and data science, and a working knowledge of African country contexts concerning climate and health.
  • This is a full-time position starting in October 2024 and ending in March 2025.
  • Candidates must have successfully completed a first university degree, and demonstrate a capacity to undertake independent advanced academic research and study.
  • Candidates must have 3 years working experience in data management, analysis and visualization.
  • Candidates must have good communication skills and possess good quantitative and/or qualitative analytical skills.
  • Candidates must have strong expertise in technology, systems development, big data, open data and data science.
  • Candidates should have working knowledge of the contexts of African countries, in respect to climate and health.
  • This is a full time position. Candidates must be available to carry out duties. The selected fellows will be expected to participate in different activities and to strictly follow the programme.

Deliverables and outputs:

  • Training on use case execution.
  • Development of a project plan for the execution and support of the use case
  • Monthly progress reports on the program.
  • Support for the specified use cases within the government department or SIO.
  • Skills and knowledge sharing among the team members of the department.
  • Take part in peer exchange activities amongst fellows, departments and organizations.

Benefits

  • Fellows will receive a monthly stipend and are expected to be physically present within the government department or SIO office during the assignment period.
  • Remuneration:
  • Fellows will receive a stipend of $1500 monthly for the duration of the fellowship.
