In the programme “Strengthening Advisory Capacities for Land Policy in Africa” (SLGA), the DAAD supports a fellowship programme available for young academics and professionals from African Union member states in the field of Land Governance and Land Management. 

The aim of the programme is for African institutions and experts to implement improved land policies in selected countries. Important fields of action are to support the African Land Policy Centre (ALPC) in setting up a Network of Excellence on Land Governance in Africa (NELGA) to improve training and further training capacities in the fields of land management and land policy in Africa, as well as to promote needs-based research in Africa and measures for monitoring, evaluation and knowledge exchange in this area.

Fellowships

  • NELGA Postdoctoral Fellowships aim to promote demand-driven research and science communication on land governance in Africa. By selecting suitable candidates with an existing connection to central institutions of land policy in Africa, the fellowship programme further strengthens institutional capacity for land governance and science-based land policy development.
  • NELGA Short-Term Research Fellowships available for young African researchers at post-graduate level, to strengthen the need for open research topics and questions in the field of land management, land governance and land policy in Africa.

Benefits

The basic fellowship consists of:

  • A monthly rate of EUR 800;
  • A virtual training workshop on Advocacy for Research Output In Addition, support for the following may be granted upon request (subject to availability of funds):
  • Reimbursement of expenses for scientific publications in relevant journals up to a maximum of EUR 1500.

Requirements

Applicants must

  • Have completed their PhD degree at a state or state recognized institution of higher education;
  • Have a background in land governance/ land management or a related field (e.g. land administration, land economics, urban and regional planning, geomatics);
  • Be nationals of an African country;
  • Be granted leave of absence by their home institution in case of conducting a field study or research stay abroad. Female applicant
